ESW receives NJ DOL OSHA Governor’s Health and Safety Performance Award
ESW Occupational Services (Edison Sheltered Workshop) has recently received a very special award from the NJ DOL OSHA division. We were one of only 28 firms in ALL of NJ, both private and public, to receive this prestigious NJ Governor’s Safety and Health award for 2023. This is second year in a row that the agency received a NJ Governors OSHA Performance Award. Many of the recipients are large fortune 500 organizations with extensive health and safety programs vs our small agency.
The agency used our expanded and detailed ESW Health and Safety program, originally developed to meet the CARF standards, to then apply for this voluntary NJ DOL OSHA award again this year. Part of the requirements for the award was the company must voluntarily agree to OSHA on-site safety and health consultation visits and inspections. We not only are participating in that program annually for the last three years – but also have the OSHA consultants come in again to perform both client and staff training sessions.
New this year the agency participated in two OSHA sponsored client training programs: “Safe and Sound Week” and “Labor Rights Week”. Each of the clients received certificates for their completion of these specialized training programs.
NJDOL Awards 28 Employers Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Awards to Celebrate Safe + Sound Week
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 14, 2024
TRENTON – Today, 28 New Jersey employers were honored with Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Awards, a program to recognize worksites – public and private – that have demonstrated effective safety and health programs resulting in the prevention of job-related injuries and illnesses.
The awards are sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL), the U.S Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the New Jersey State Industrial Safety Committee (NJSISC).
“Ensuring the safety and well-being of workers is essential to fostering a productive and thriving workforce where everyone is valued,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “I thank our employers whose steadfast commitment has been made evident through their efforts to provide a safe and healthy work environment, which not only benefits their teams but our entire community.”
The 95th Annual Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Awards were presented during the OSHA NYC Region Safe + Sound Kickoff Webinar, which highlighted the roles of management and employees in finding and fixing hazards to ensure workplaces remain healthy and safe.
A national event held each August, Safe + Sound Week takes place this year from August 12-18, and is a time to recognize the successes of workplace health and safety programs and offer information and ideas on how to keep workers safe.
“OSHA salutes these New Jersey companies that have taken a comprehensive and systematic approach to health and safety to ensure a safe and sound workplace,” said U.S. Department of Labor OSHA Regional Administrator Richard Mendelson in New York. “We encourage employers to recognize the value of workplace safety and health programs all year round.”
“It is great honor that the NJSISC is able to continue to co-sponsor this award with the NJDOL and OSHA to identify the New Jersey employers who go above and beyond to keep their workplaces safe for their employees,” said Patrick Mulrooney, vice chairperson of the New Jersey State Industrial Safety Committee. “This collaboration has worked through some challenges to come up with a new award structure to recognize those employers with excellent safety programs and safety records. In addition, we look to acknowledge those Garden State organizations who are making significant strides on their journey for safety excellence. This alliance is committed to assist all New Jersey employers to provide a workplace free of recognized hazards and to create a safety culture within their respective organizations.”
Since its establishment in 1927, the Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Awards program has promoted safer and healthier workplaces with thousands of awards being earned by Garden State employers.
The New Jersey Governor’s Award for Safety and Health Excellence goes to employers who exemplify the highest level of safety and health performance by participating in voluntary safety and health achievement programs, demonstrating a comprehensive safety and health culture, and striving for continuous improvement.
The New Jersey Governor’s Award for Safety and Health Performance acknowledges employers who have shown a strong commitment to improving their safety and health programs by utilizing the NJDOL OSHA On-Site Consultation Program, or Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health Consultation Program, and who have established robust safety and health program management systems as evidenced by low injury and illness rates.
The New Jersey Governor’s Award for Safety and Health Achievement recognizes employers who are committed to improving their safety and health programs, and who have injury and illness rates below their industry average.
